1947 Harley-Davidson WLA
Purchased from a Chinese motorcycle mechanic in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1990 as a basketcase/rebuild. Then I had it rebuilt again in Medan, Sumatra by another Chinese mechanic, every nut, bolt and part was laid out on a white sheet and either painted or chromed. We found aluminum beer cans shims on this teardown. This is where the paint job came about. It is a copy of one from an old Easyrider magazine bike. Chrome work was performed in Medan and is not very good quality. Some flaking of the chrome is apparent. At this time some NOS parts were added from the USA. I then "rescued" the bike from Indonesia in 1993 and brought it back to the USA. I had the engine disassembled and gone through by an experienced Flathead mechanic in Colorado and the bike has less than 50 miles on the rebuild. All legitimate flathead parts in the engine were used this time. The Colorado Highway Police issued the bike a new VIN number on the frame as the old numbers on the case had been altered in Indonesia. The case VIN boss is blank. It now has a clear Colorado title. I have it running currently. It is ready as an everyday rider, but if you want a show piece or a museum item then it needs a complete restoration. It leaks oil like an old Harley but does not smoke as the engine rebuild is like new. The speedometer reads kilometers per hour but needs work to be functional. The tires need replacing as some cracking is visible.
Quite an interesting history on a real eye catcher of a bike.
